Blind Willies

Blind Willies will be performing new music from their upcoming CD, The Unkindness of Ravens.

Blind Willies is Annie Staninec, ambidextrous and multi-genre fiddler, and Alexei Wajchman, guitarist and singer/songwriter. They met and began playing together in the halls of San Francisco School of the Arts. Annie has been playing bluegrass fiddle for more than a decade. She's a regular on the bluegrass festival circuit where she tours and records with Donner Mountain Bluegrass Band. She's also touring this year with David Grisman and the Gypsy Caravan as the featured fiddler.

Alexei grew up in the heart of San Francisco's Mission District. After learning to play clarinet and sax, he taught himself to play guitar and began writing songs at 15. He was awarded the Blue Bear Celebrity Scholarship to study guitar and voice in 2002 and 2003. His early influences included Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Velvet Underground, Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Lightnin Hopkins, Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors. His music is a soulful mix of folk, country, and blues, and his lyrics are an intimate exploration of America's psycho/social landscapes.

Blind Willies made their professional debut at San Francisco's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in 2004.

Lila Nelson

Lila Nelson has been composing songs since her single digits. The daughter of a modern dancer and a blues harp player, and granddaughter of the regionalist era painter/lithographer John S. de Martelly, it is no wonder that Lila looks at life through a lyrical lens. At three, she drew an imaginary line down her middle, head to toe, and insisted, "I know where half of infinity is... right here." Later on, washing dishes to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Nina Simone, Nick Drake, Stevie Wonder, and the Beatles - practicing harmonies with sisters on walks in the Santa Margarita River Valley and writing lyrics for her brother's early three chord ventures on the guitar helped set the stage for a career as a prolific singer/songwriter.

Her songs move from traditional folk to contemporary folk/Americana, to jazz, blues, and ballad always finding their home inside of the rich stories that they tell. Her love of performance and her irrepressible sense of humor are reflected in the intimacy she creates with audiences big and small. With a knack for the spotting the uncanny, the deliciously ironic, the silent spaces between words, and a voice like sunshine Lila could sit in her remote Northern California town and at least keep her own home lit up. But lately she's been taking it on the road, playing venues all across the country; the "Freight and Salvage" in Berkeley, CA to "The Livingroom" in New York City; 2005's AMA Conference in Nashville, TN to "The Tractor Tavern" in Seattle, WA.; "The Pine Mountain Music Festival" in Southern CA to "The Main St. Cafe", in Southern FL...

When Lila's not touring alone she can be heard singing alongside the LA troubadour, Brian Joseph (Danish American House Concert – June 2005), Kenny Edwards (Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley) and Nashville's Amelia White (Funazalo Records). She is recently returned from the Kate Wolf Music Festival; be sure to pick up her new EP, "Sheen” before it's gone.

Dennis McGregor

Dennis will be performing at our house in support of his most recent CD Most People Are Good on the Small Pond recording label. He was the winner of the 2004 Sisters, Oregon Songwriting Competition.  His songs are lean, effective stories of life in Central Oregon, and Dennis' lifetime as a visual and performing artist.

Dennis McGregor started out in the 1970s with the original acid-swing group, Natty Bumppo. His electric violin and wacky songs were a key element of their uniquely exciting style. They were immediately discovered at L.A.'s Troubador and were soon opening for acts like Cheech & Chong, Jimmy Buffett, The Dirt Band and others. Every major studio in L.A. brought them in to record demos but no one could figure out how to market their "off the wall" sound in the disco era.

After a decade and the birth of his daughters, McGregor left the music business and moved his family to the tiny town of Sisters, Oregon. There he pursued his other love, the visual arts. Over the next decade he became nationally recognized for his posters and prints.

Then it happened. His town started a folk festival and he got sucked back in. He started writing songs again as he watched the Festival's contest produce winners like Chuck McCabe, Darryl Purpose and Dave Carter. He entered and won the songwriting contest in 2003.

In 2004 he released his first solo CD, "most people are good" and played in the Festival's lineup. Oregon Public Broadcasting showed up to document his songs and paintings for their series, Oregon Art Beat, which aired in March 2005. Dennis continues to paint, mostly by commission, as he writes songs for his next CD.

McGregor's songs are well-loved for their humor, lyrical wit and social relevance. His finger-pickin' guitar and deep voice add to his unique mix of "jazzy folk that lives on the outskirts of pop."

Join us for an afternoon of great songs, spry guitar licks, and the company of good friends in support of live music.

The Sundogs’ own Joe Paquin won’t hesitate to tell you about the wild and wonderful ride of life he’s on. Armed with a wealth of history and inspiration, the ex-Marine, Viet Nam Vet, cancer survivor thrives on sharing his whole wide world with ours through his well-crafted, critically acclaimed songs.

Out of the molds of Carmichael, Prine, Haggard, and Cash comes Paquin, who gratefully acknowledges that his own songs are not exclusively his own. He reasons that, due to his oftentimes effortless writing sessions, he’s getting "help" from somewhere.

Joe Paquin recently completed a successful San Francisco Bay area tour that included a few of Joe's old haunts from back in his days in residence there (1984-2001).  Joe also got a chance to get into former Sundog, Jimmy Hobson's studio in San Pablo to begin work on   Hippiebilly Heaven, the title of his new record. He completed three songs, including "Little Winnebago", a favorite of fans of The Joe Paquin Band.

Joe's song, "Pray for Peace", has been selected by producer and disc jockey, Arden Eaton of KPIG radio, to be included on a compilation CD titled, Take Me Home.  Other artists include Country Joe McDonald, Jesse Colin Young, Joe Craven, and Bob Brozman.  It will be nationally released and distributed to over 200 Americana radio stations sometime in February. All proceeds from the sale of this record will go directly to the Veterans for Peace organization.

Joe will be performing at the Strawberry Music Festival at Camp Mather this spring, so this house concert is a chance to see and hear Paquin perform in an intimate, friendly atmosphere.

Jim Page
Sunday, December 4, 2005
Aptos, CA

Jim Page was born in Palo Alto, and raised in San Jose.

Jim began playing guitar at 15, went to New York in 1970, Seattle in '71. where he helped change street singing laws in '74. He went to Europe in '77, began touring and living abroad. He returned to Seattle in 1983 where he still lives.

After seeing him perform at the High Sierra Music Festival in the summer of ‘97, Rob Bleetstein of Gavin wrote:
“Jim Page is a lyrical genius with a guitar. This man personifies the word ‘free-flow.’ Page takes to the mic and the song invents itself on the spot; his talent is a natural wonder.”
And in any of the many countries, from the countless tours and stages he has played people say the same. “A truly amazing man...one of the great originals. Ignore him at your peril.” - Hot Press, Dublin

Jim has been on the scene for more than twenty years and his reputation continues to grow. He has shared the stage with the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Dan Bern, Michelle Shocked, Leftover Salmon, Mickey Hart, J.J. Cale, Robert Hunter, Chuck Brodsky, and John Hammond. His songs have been performed by Christy Moore, Michael Hedges, John Trudell, The Doobie Brothers, Joanne Rand, Casey Neill, and (yes) David Soul.

Often cited for his biting political pieces he is in constant demand by the social movements of the day.

“More reminiscent of the Woody Guthrie I heard as a boy than anyone I’ve listened to in the intervening years” - Philip Elwood, San Francisco Examiner

“A master of the craft of song writing, a wicked guitar player and the most relevant topical musician of his day.” - Casey Neill, Earth First! Journal

Jim easily fits into the concert hall or the class room. Brian Tokar, Goddard College: “Even the most skeptical students were convinced by the end of class that, in your able hands, the rich tradition of topical song writing is alive and well in the late 1990s. Your songs bring a phenomenal mix of humor, irony and lyrical brilliance to exposing the outrages and absurdities of our times.”

Or in the house concert. Peter Sussman, Duncan, British Columbia: “Jim is truly one of the best song writers of our day....the range of his creations is extremely broad and runs the gamut from biting satire to beautiful, sensitive love songs. He must be heard.”

And of course, at the festivals sitting in with his electric friends:
“The best had to be when that wonderful folksinger Jim Page joined the mainstage outdoor closer Leftover Salmon. He strums a few chords to get them started and then they build the melody up. Jim starts to improvise lyrics... And all of Leftover Salmon is grinning ear-to-ear. I’ve seen 1500-plus concerts and that moment was as wonderful a band/audience connection as I’ve ever witnessed.” - Dupree’s Diamond News

Rod Picott
Sunday, August 14, 2005
Aptos, CA

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Rod Picott (pronounced Pie-caught) performs a balance of gritty rock numbers and poetic acoustic ballads. His charisma and unique vocal style is truly mesmerizing. With his latest release, Girl From Arkansas, Rod continues to thrive and expand as a storyteller and singer. This CD brings Picott's eye for lyric detail and whiskey-voiced delivery together with a newfound intimacy. He's a narrative storyteller offering glimpses and insights into the lives of 'ordinary' people, giving the listener enough detail to identify and relate to the characters and situations - it's gritty, clever and honest songwriting that immediately grabs your attention. His gravel-tinged vocals are smooth and effortless, the musical backing is varied and dynamic, and the overall sound is elegant and sophisticated.

Rod is also known as the co-writer with Slaid Cleaves of  "Broke Down" and "Bring It On". Rod wrote "Getting to Me" with fireball Fred Eaglesmith on the critically acclaimed 50 Odd Dollars album.

In 2002 Picott's Stray Dogs displayed even finer skills as a writer and vocalist and featured guest appearances from Alison Krauss and pal Slaid Cleaves. The album was embraced by Americana radio and found it's way onto the chart for a time without the help of hired radio promotion - a surprise to some in the industry. It also found it's way onto many of the year’s best lists in both the States and Europe.

Brian Joseph
Saturday, June 4 8:00 PM

Singer-songwriter and award-winning actor, Brian Joseph's concert offers an all-acoustic performance of music, heaped with honest storytelling and living-room warmth. His stage show is simultaneously fun and soulful, combining extemporaneous songwriting, myriad forms of audience interaction and humiliation, and his own intelligent, politically conscious urban-folk sound. Brian has toured internationally, playing in venues from Havana, Cuba, to New York, San Francisco, and Wamego, Kansas. He will be performing on the main stage at the Strawberry Music festival in September. Come and find out why Brian has been called "A troubador in the classic sense" (Oakland Tribune) and a "major dude [on] the top of the list of New Folk Debutantes." (listen.com)

"There is a startling completeness in Brian Joseph's songwriting. His elegant acoustic guitar fingerstylings, warm, velvety vocal phrasing, melodic ear, and knack for gracefully weaving wit, sensitivity, and insight into his lyrics, converge to yield a rich, fresh, fully formed musical document. - Jim Kirlin, Taylor Guitars

Chuck Brodsky
from North Carolina

Chuck Brodsky's songwriting pokes fun at political corruption, road rage, mischief he made as a kid, even dumping garbage in the river; he sings about unsung heroes and forgotten but incredible people. Chuck has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, and Ireland for 11 years, playing at folk festivals such as Tønder in Denmark. His groove-oriented strumming and fingerpicking draw on influences from the mountains of western North Carolina where he now lives, and from lots of different good old traditional folk stuff of all kinds. He is one of our favorite musicians and a performer we've wanted to present to our audience for quite some time.  Now's your chance.  But you must see hear, and decide for yourself.  Go to his official website to find out more about this outstanding troubadour.  There are MP3 songs you can you can hear and enjoy.

http://www.chuckbrodsky.com/index.html

Brodsky is one of those few singer-songwriters who can really tell a whopper of a story --- I’m talking flesh-and-blood characters, a coherent plotline, a vivid setting, all wrapped in a lot of realistic human drama and emotion. He’s so good at it, you barely notice that he’s structured words a certain way to make them fit in the same line, or that he’s rhyming. It’s really these knockout tales of genuine human triumphs that bring out his strongest songwriting.
Steve Palopoli , editor Metro Weekly

Fromseier Rose - violin/piano duo

http://www.fromseierrose.com

Fiddle and piano can be a genius combination - this is definitely the case with the duo Fromseier Rose. Their music is light and relaxed, but at the same time full of passion and emotion. The two musicians have a completely different background. But as soon as they played the first tune together at the Copenhagen Irish Festival in 2001 they realized that they have the same musical passion and that their chemistry is working perfectly together.

Ditte Fromseier Mortensen hails from the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. She started to play classical violin at the age of four, and has studied and still studies music in England and Ireland. Michael G. Rose was born in Boston and influenced by the New England music scene. After moving to Denmark he has studied Latin Jazz, but he still is very active in the folk music scene.

Their music is based on traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, New England, and they add some own compositions and influences from classical music, Latin, jazz to present a fascinating sound experience which is close, but not too close to the traditions.

"When I listen to the Danish-American duo Fromseier Rose I realize why the musical duo format means so much to me. There is nowhere to hide in a duo. Both musicians must step forward in a conversation between equals, playing as individuals while remaining completely dependent on each other. This is what Ditte Fromseier Mortensen and Michael G Rose achieve in Contradiction. Starting in the Celtic tradition and drawing inspiration from influences as diverse as classical and afro-Cuban music, Fromseier Rose explores the many possibilities of the duo format while taking their audience on a dynamic musical journey. Listen to them now!" (Morten Alfred Høirup, music journalist and musician)
"Michael G Rose and Ditte Fromseier Mortensen make intelligent, beautiful music with a rare sensitivity and lightness of touch." (John Spillane)
